Changes to BAC cutoff are being proposed.

The benchmark for the blood alcohol content cutoff has been at 0.08 for quite some time.

The National Transportation Safety Board would prefer that every state change that cutoff to 0.05.

Thoughts on the new standard idea:

  • The NTSB chairman believes that impaired driving should be considered a national epidemic.
  • The plan is to eliminate drunk driving
  • At this time a third of deaths on the road can be blamed on drunk driving.
  • The safety board believes that there will be 5-8 hundred less deaths yearly.

A DUI and child endangerment-too bad it is not a much rarer occurrence.

What is worse than getting a DUI?

Getting that DUI coupled with having a child in the car. Even more troublesome-Hitting a few police cars while it happens.

Most of us avoid driving after we have had a few drinks. It is also pretty common that if you are going to drive your car after drinking to at the very least be extremely careful when there are patrol cars nearby.

A North Carolina man recently crashed his car into four state troopers with a child in the car.

The charges: Patrick Willis was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and child abuse.

The breathalyzer: the driver was tested and registered a .14, with the legal limit being .08.

What happened?

Willis was driving off of the interstate. He should have slowed down when he was on the loop of the exit. Instead he ran into the raised concrete curb that was at the top of the ramp. This resulted in the vehicle crossing the US highway 29 and hitting the police cars. His defense is going to be pretty tough because the incident was captured on the troopers in car video system.

The troopers:

The officers were on traffic duty for the Coca Cola 600 NASCAR race.

Two of the officers were injured trying to escape the collision.

The driver that was arrested was driving a Lexus and the crash happened at approximately 3:30 in the afternoon. If he would have slowed down just a little, he would have been able to negotiate the turn at the top of the ramp safely. It was likely a driving move that he had done successfully many times in the past. Being under the influence of alcohol is certainly to have been a big factor is  his not being able to drive safely. The child was strapped into the front seat, next to him and having a child in the car can be very distracting as well. The distraction of a child coupled with the effects of alcohol can make getting into a wreck much easier.

Killer crashes happen on the water too

Most of us think about automobiles when we hear about vehicle crashes that cause grave injuries. When people think about a DUI, they usually associate that with an automobile as well. There are many incidents though that do not involve vehicles with wheels. Unfortunately many accidents will happen during holiday weekends.
